Quality
The 4Cs
Cut describes how well a stone's facets are proportioned and polished. A well-cut stone returns more light, so it looks brighter and livelier. Cut grades run from Excellent down to Poor.
Diamond colour is graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). D to F are colourless and G to J near colourless; neighbouring grades are hard to tell apart without comparison stones.
Clarity grades tiny internal features (inclusions) and surface marks (blemishes), from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1 to I3). VS stones and many SI stones look clean to the naked eye.
Carat is a unit of weight: one carat equals 0.2 grams. Two stones of the same weight can look different in size depending on their shape and cut.
